Selecting a suitable environment for your parrot is fraught with dangers. Toys can contain dangerous metals such as zinc or lead, whilst perches can be made from toxic woods such as cherry or oak. Even cages can be made of harmful things: I can bring to mind two cases of zinc toxicosis which were caused by dangerous cages. While yearly check ups at the vets are an excellent thing and strongly advised, using safe toys, cages and perches suited to the foot size of your bird will reduce the number of unplanned vet visits!
